Becca Project
We are excited to welcome Becca Project to New Plymouth with our newest range of candles and body oils created by the team of two gorgeous mums, Bec and Carla.
We’ve taken some time this month to find out more about them and their business.

Tell us a little bit about yourselves?
We met outside the classroom when our kids first started school. Bec’s son took my worried little girl under his wing and they’ve been firm friends ever since and so have we. We’ve bonded over a shared love for fashion and creativity and more than a few shared glasses of wine. We both love being outside, especially at the beach and we can always be found down at Castor Bay beach with our kids. Bec has three sons and Carlie two girls.
What did you both do before the Becca Project?
Carlie work’s at North shore hospital as a Radiographer and has a Masters in health science. She still works at the hospital in between Becca Project. Bec has a degree in Art and Design and has always been in creative roles.
Both of us were diagnosed with auto-immune diseases and we were both fascinated by the potential effects of essential oils but we agreed we needed to do something to make the scents better and less overpowering. We talked about burning the oils in wax as we were both fans of scented candles, so we signed up for a candle-making course.

What is the Becca Project all about?
The Becca Project ethos is all around ‘hygge’, taking time to enjoy the little things like lighting a candle. This is why we initially launched with our candle range. There are already so many products in the market for a consumer to buy. We wanted our range to be select and unique and to offer only quality products that can give our customers that feeling of contentment and taking a moment in time to care for themselves. Candles were our first baby!
We decided to take on the challenge of combining essential oils and candles! Because we love candles and because we realised after some initial scepticism, that essential oils were actually benefiting us personally and easing the symptoms of our chronic health conditions.
Most people think essential oil candles are two-a-penny, but almost all fragranced candles are just that made from fragrance, but not the actual essential oil. We mix ours directly into the wax. It took a lot of trial and error to get the mix right, but now our candles provide the direct wellbeing benefits of the oils, inhaled as the candle burns.
We later introduced our Becca Project diffusers which feature as part of our matching scent ranges. These allow the beneficial essential oils to fill the air, while giving the room a gorgeous mood-enhancing scent.

What inspires your scents?
We decide on a feeling – and experience if you like. So ‘how do we want this to make someone feel – uplifted, relaxed, sleepy – then we research the oils and start to blend. It’s our favourite part of the process, we’ve started to get a good feel for what goes well together now so we can mix up a scent we are proud of and have fun with it too.
Any exciting new products in the pipeline?
We are always coming up with new exciting ideas. We have a few new products on the horizon, but one of our main focuses is always on sustainability. We are looking to bring recyclable foil pouches out to top up our body oils and diffusers.
What makes a home feel homely to you?
We believe strongly in the concept of ‘hygge’, taking time to enjoy the little things like lighting a candle. When you take the time to fill your home with those special items that can give you small pleasures, and rejuvenate the soul you have that “homely” feel.
