Nursery Nesting Tips

As part of a pregnancy, the nesting drive kicks in and our natural outlet for that is designing the nursery. For most of us, designing a nursery for our babies is a sweet and dreamy idea, however there’s a lot to consider to make sure it’s a safe, comfortable, and serene room for them to take their first steps. See our top 5 tips to help you design a space that will work for you, and your baby.

Nursery Nesting Tips

1. Design to grow

While you want to design a room that’s beautiful for your baby, keep in mind that they won’t stay babies forever. It’s important to consider how the room will grow with your child, without needing to redo it each time they go through different life stages. Invest in wallpaper, paint, rugs, and furniture that are timeless. Then layer these items with playful elements through textiles, artwork, and décor pieces that are easy to update as they grow.

2. Find fun storage solutions

Storage is a must-have in a nursery to help keep everything contained and easy to find, without being a hazard to your inquisitive baby who is yet to learn what is good to put in their mouth, and what isn’t! Use your storage as a way to add fun into the space, with different shapes, patterns and colours.

3. Layer the lighting

Lighting is important in your nursery. It is the room that needs to support your baby getting into a good sleep routine. It is crucial to have options to block out the light during the day to mimic the night, and to be able to adjust the levels of light with lamps and dimmable switches for night feeds and re-settling when baby wakes. Consider what different scenarios you will need your nursery to work, and what lighting and window treatments will achieve that.

4. Create zones

Nurseries consist of 3 main zones – sleeping, feeding, and changing. Each of these activities will require specific furniture and accessories, so consider how best to lay them out to go from one task to the next with as much ease as possible.

5. Think like a baby

When deciding on placement, consider life from a small baby’s perspective. They spend a lot of time of their backs, therefore the nursery is a room where the ceiling can become the main canvas. Consider adding wallpaper, coloured paint or mobiles to the ceiling to stimulate your child in the early years of their life.
